Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
